Protecting the Environment

Everyone can help to maintain a cleaner environment simply by some easy changes to what we do daily. Here are a list of some

  1. Turn off the lights in rooms where no one is there.  Turn off also other electrical equipments that need not be on.
  2. Do not keep the home too warm in winter.  Bacteria and viruses better survive and become more active in warmer homes.
  3. To take bath or wash your hands and face use the minimum amount of warm water necessary.  Usually we use far too much water while washing.  By a simple attention we realize that a large amount of warm water we pour on our hands or body do not make any contact with our skin and only go to the drain without cleaning us.  We should also shut the water flow when we are not using it, ex. when soaping.  Running shower is a very inefficient way of warming the bath, if you need, use an electric heater.
  4. When washing dishes, use a minimum flow of warm water.  Dishes will be clean as good as using a large flow of warm water.  If you don’t believe this, next time you do dishes, try it.
  5. Buy and use an electric car. This greatly reduces carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.  Compare to diesel or gasoline cars an electric car is very simple machine with thousands less parts and components.  It does not need services such as engine oil & filter change, checking and adding coolant, oil level, etc.  Since an electric motor is by far a simpler machine than a car engine it is much more reliable. Moreover, electric cars do not need;  complex transmission system, fuel system, starter, cooling system, etc. therefore they break down less with low maintenance.  An electric car is significantly more energy efficient than even the most modern gasoline cars.  Even the fossil fuel burning power stations including environmentally worst of them all i.e. coal burning ones pollute less than the most modern cars for the same amount of energy.  Soon electric cars can go long distances.  Before the industry is able to make batteries that are able to go far while heating the cabinet in winters of cold climates, a propane cylinder can provide heat instead of the expensive hybrid cars.  My suggestion is to buy a small electric car for daily use and rent a Cadillac, an SUV, whatever you like when need to go for a long trip!  Small inexpensive electric cars are coming to market soon, I believe.  We would save on the purchase price, services, repairs and even fuel cost since as mentioned above, electric cars are less costly to manufacture and are superior in efficiency to gasoline burning cars.  Regarding the purchase prices, the cost should be less since the electric cars are simpler to manufacture.  Making batteries is by far less complex than manufacturing gas tank, fuel pump, fuel lines; filter, nozzles, fuel distribution system and their fire protection plus the existing batteries.  Manufacturers should not be too greedy, thinking of profit only, selling the electric cars expensive simply because consumers are used to pay a lot for their vehicles.  Do you think they listen to me?  Inquire about the warranty of the batteries and other components when purchasing.  Regarding power stations, there is no doubt that they are moving towards; solar, hydro, wind and other sun sources of energy, replacing fossil fuel burning power stations.  Any of the American sunny and dry southern states can provide electricity for the entire North America utilizing photo-electric panels,  I think so!  We can and must reverse the terrible green-house effect.
  6. Please use reusable dishes and utensil such as china and regular cutleries.  The manufacturers of disposables may not be pleased with this suggestion but throwaway is a bad, bad, bad fashion.  Throwaways don’t even look good.
  7. Recycling is very important.  Please make sure to recycle all recyclables.  I know people who even separate different types of recyclables like plastic and cardboard if they are glued together.
  8. If the product you purchase, ex. milk is available in recyclable or better, reusable containers like jugs, buy that instead of throwaway pouches.  When manufacturers know that consumers prefer and buy their products in reusable or recyclable containers they definitely follow the wish of their customers.
  9. We should take our own special coffee mugs to buy coffee.  Your car coffee mug keeps the coffee warm, it is less likely to spill and more comfortable to drink from plus better looking.
  10. Purchase an under-sink water filter.  Save on purchase of bottled water and help the environment.  Bottled water is passed through a similar only larger filter.
  11. If you are in a position of influence, it’s your honest duty to try to make laws and regulations to save the environment.  We are not the last generation living on this limited earth.
  12. If you and others you know have access to a large finance,  a very good investment in the United States for example, is to produce large amounts of electric power by installing solar panels  in states like Arizona or New Mexico with mostly sunny days, bright sunshine, lands that are not used for any agriculture and access to both roads and the electric power grids.  This is a true productive and profitable investment.  Wind turbine electric production is also a great environmental help.
  13. Photoelectric energy production by installing solar panels on roof tops is a very good idea but it is usually an expensive project plus the necessary equipment; transformer, converter etc. take some space. The cost of those equipment is a significant part of the overall price.  If neighbours come together they can significantly reduce the cost for such a project by having only one set of equipment in one room for the entire block as well as reducing the cost by having a larger project for the contractor.  Share of each house from the electric production income can easily be registered by such a system.  Contractors of solar panels can also initiate and do such projects in neighbourhoods and use attics or garage for the equipments.  Solar energy is pollution free.
  14. Adding insulation to your house saves you money as well as the environment.
  15. Ride sharing (car pooling), particularly driving to and back from work saves you money, less pressure of driving twice a day, less chance of accident and you can enjoy socializing.  Walking to a corner to be picked up would be a good exercise too.  So many benefits would definitely outweighs its little limitations.
  16. Converting fossil fuel power stations to wood burning power stations is not only environmentally right, it is relatively simple.  If you have been in your town dump site you have seen what a large amount of construction, house-hold and other refused wood are thrown as garbage.  We should recommend, even influence that municipalities to collect wood as recycle to be burn for producing electricity.  It would be less expensive to burn recycled wood instead of petroleum fuel or even coal.  The amount of carbon-dioxide that is released into air by burning wood is actually the same amount of CO2 that was absorbed before by trees, while if dumped as waste it emits exactly the same amount of green house gases without producing electricity.  Burning coal removes 2.7 tons of our breathing oxygen from the atmosphere for each ton of coal, while adding 3.7 tons of extra green-house gas into the atmosphere!  Another source of wood as fuel are dry and fallen trees particularly in forests.  An inexpensive way with the minimum use of energy to remove dead trees from forests is the use of Helium balloons with a crew of two or three men.  They can find dead trees by moving above the tree tops then move down by cable and cut and remove the dead trees.  Another advantage of removing the dead trees from the forests is preventing many disastrous forest (wild) fires.  Dead trees, being dry can catch fire easily plus while rotting, they emit flammable gases and can burst into fire by lightening or human mistakes, causing forest fires.
  17. Planting more trees: The oxygen-producing lungs of the earth are all plants and in particular are trees. For start, those who live in a house can plant fruit trees in their back yards to help the environment as well as enjoying tree ripped fruits with incomparable tastes to the fruits that are picked unripe and only have become soft resembling ripe in storages and on their way to the market.  We can also suggest to the authorities to plant trees wherever it can be done, like road sides and highways ramp locks.  We must save parks, forests, conservations and other areas with trees.  I have a simple suggestion as follows that it might increase rain precipitation in dryer areas.  As far as I know it never has been tested but it’s so simple with low cost that it worth trying.  The same suggestion can save forests from fires caused by lightening.
  18. Water evaporation of oceans and seas increases the air pressure above them, since the water vapour pumped into atmosphere is like extra volume of air.  This high pressure air moves toward low air pressure regions.  Where are the low air pressure regions and how the air pressure is reduced?  The most common case is the reverse of the evaporation effect.  When the clouds i.e. water vapours are condensed to rain or snow their volume are reduced by a few thousand times, creating vacuum in the atmosphere, causing low pressure regions.  Therefore, raining can cause moist air and clouds to move to the same area.  This means green regions of the earth receive more precipitations while dry regions with less precipitation remain dry.  There is another factor controlling the precipitation of rain in particular.  Like other electrically nonconductive substances cloud vapour particles become electrically charged while moving by wind in the air.  Clouds are converted to liquid or ice when they are oversaturated in the air as a result of a lower temperature but since the vapour particles have the same electric name charge, mostly positive they repel each other and cannot make droplets even when oversaturated.  This is a brilliant design!  Otherwise, the clouds would rain less in the regions far from the oceans and large seas, pouring too much precipitations on the close-by lands causing floods in those regions and draught in other areas.  We all have noticed that immediately after lightenings, rain pours down.  This is because the electrically charged clouds discharge electricity, eventually into earth and as the result can form rain droplets.  In my country of birth Iran, with mostly dry land, I had noticed that frequently clouds come and go without raining even when the air temperature was low.  Dry land is electrically nonconductive and consequently charged clouds cannot discharge into a dry land or even dry mountains, In those conditions the following suggestion might help.  Talking of Iran, the province of German, (Now Arabicised to Kerman, like Parsi to Farsi) being dry even though close to the Indian Ocean, could be a good candidate for this trial.  The idea is to build metal frame towers as tall as possible on the top of as high as possible hills and mountains.  The top of these towers to be equipped with lightening rods and the bottom of towers connected to a wire going down the hill to the bottom of a well deep into the moist ground. This possibly can trigger some precipitation and as explained above raining can cause low air pressure bringing moist air and clouds.  There are many other places in the world like German that can try this idea.  In forests that historically lightnings cause wild fires like California, same idea of lightning towers sufficiently taller than trees may protect trees from lightnings and fire. One of the biggest and the worst causes of increasing the green house gases in the atmosphere is the forest fires.  It is a well known fact that the forest fires start often as a result of negligence by those who picnic in the woods.  Wild fires are worst since not only a large amount of green house gases are added into the air, at the same time they burn the trees that were reducing carbon-dioxide.  It is obvious that people go to the woods to enjoy and make fire in forests for their barbecues.  Unfortunately having good time for many includes drinking alcohol.  One cannot expect that at the end of the picnic drunken people would carefully put out fires fully before leaving and not throwing lit cigaret buts into dry leaves.  If all like to drink, the solution is that as soon as they arrive to the picnic area and before drinking, think and plan for the camp fire to be in a safe area plus necessary preparations, ex. Putting a pitch full of water next to the fire, to be able to put the fire out easily and fully before leaving.
  19. You can help the environment a lot by smart driving, for example, when driving in city streets watch the traffic lights from far.  You quickly learn how to reach the red lights with minimum speed.  This simple and easy practice and other smart drivings help the environment, save you gas money plus less break reapers without any time difference in arriving your destination!
  20. Adult tricycles with loading baskets are good for short distance shopping, excellent exercise and good for environment.  Battery powered tricycles are also being sold now, another good product.
  21. We should minimize the amount of house garbage by all means such as buying smart, composting, recycling, and donating things we do not need.

The above suggestions are only some examples of what we all can do.  Please think of other things you can do.
